Experience

Hi! My name is Allain and graduated from the University of San Diego in May 2013 with a degree in environmental studies and minors in economics and history. In the past year I have been traveling internationally in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. A majority of the year was spent in the Gili Islands of Indonesia becoming certified and then working as a scuba dive instructor. While abroad I applied for law school and this fall I will be attending UVA Law School. In terms of tutoring I consider myself a test prep specialist. I have taken the LSAT twice and scored a 174 (top 99.4%) and then a 177 (top 99.8%) I have a deep understanding of the test and feel confident that I can design a personalized study, and test-day strategy that will improve the score of any student. Furthermore, in high school I excelled on the SAT (2040) and ACT (32) and I also feel confident tutoring these standardized tests. I am confident tutoring more conventional subjects as well, any math up to pre-calculus, high school level science (chemistry, biology, physics, geology), economics and all history subjects as I have excelled in these subjects at the university level. I also am a strong writer and can help improve writing skills at any level.

Hobbies

I am very confident in my leadership and teaching ability. While working as a scuba dive instructor in Indonesia. As part of this job I was responsible for preparing people with no experience and varying degrees of confidence to go scuba diving in the open ocean. Based on an individuals strengths and weaknesses I would tailor the course for maximum efficiency. Some students learned best in the controlled practical setting of the swimming pool while others felt more confident spending more time int he classroom reviewing the theory of diving. Regardless of the student I always found a way to prepare them sufficiently for the novelty of diving and stress that comes with the risk involved. I also had the position of lead guide in the University of San Diego Outdoor adventures program. Part of my responsibility was to organize and lead guide training trips. On these I would teach new guides in our program both outdoor leadership and technical outdoor skills. Once again this gave me experience assessing how individual students learn and using that knowledge to teach most effectively. Furthermore I have experience tutoring for the LSAT. Throughout my senior year of college I tutored many friends for the LSAT. For some I helped assess strengths and weaknesses to design a study plan that would allow for maximum gains in the time they had before the test. With others I was more hands on and worked with them to improve on the specific sections (reading comprehension, logic games, and logical reasoning). I used several techniques including talking through the reasoning behind questions, using exercises to improve speed, and completing exercises to practice diagraming some of the more complex logical reasoning and logic games questions. I will use my technical knowledge and teaching experience to find the most efficient way to tutor all of my students no matter their age or goals.
